Just moved to San Antonio - LFG!

I finally 'finished' my game manual - enough for a beta playtest release.  The world is really the centerpiece of the thing. I'm less worried about the world working cohesively and organically as I am about whether I've communicated it well enough.…

I finally 'finished' my game manual - enough for a beta playtest release.  Since mechanics is something I'm much less confident about than worldbuilding, I'd really appreciate any feedback on the system end of things.Stone, Steel, and Steam Beta Pla…

I've mused about how there are tons of worldbuilding guides, but no mechanic design tutorials. Whatever the reason, it leaves anyone interested system as well as (or instead of) setting left to his own bootstraps and occasional reverse engineering.O…

In the grand old days of gaming when RPGs were unfamiliar or believed to be dangerous, every game product had a 'What is a role-playing game?' section in the introduction and usually some kind of disclaimer, 'This game is a work of fiction and will…

I've noticed there are tons of tutorials and guides to worldbuilding out there. They go into several methods, brainstorming exercises, and checklists of things to consider. There are few, if any, guides for developing systems. Obviously, worldbuild…

I've never played or even seen Pathfinder, but I've heard some noise about it, a lot of LFGs in the forums, so it seems to be pretty popular, so I decided to check out the website: Is it just me, or did they just confess to being a D&D knockoff?

Economics is not my strong point, and I should have thought of that before undertaking this world. What I've got is eight different civilizations with different resources, technology, and manufacturing capabilities. The higher tech nations are tryin…

RPGs and Religion

Everyone knows some religious fanatics took a hard line against RPGs back in the early days. I've started wondering if the reverse might not also be true to some extent: do you suppose gamers are negatively disposed toward [organized] religion? If so, do you think that's religion's fault, gaming's fault, simply that the personality type attracted to gaming doesn't harmonize well with organized religion, or none of the above?

I thought about masking my intent, making a very… Continue

Damage Control: Designing a Combat System that Works

I've mused about how there are tons of worldbuilding guides, but no mechanic design tutorials. Whatever the reason, it leaves anyone interested system as well as (or instead of) setting left to his own bootstraps and occasional reverse engineering.

Over the past week or so I've put the finishing touches on the combat system for the game I'm designing. I'd build it, test it, break it, and go back to the drawing board, again and again. After seven complete overhauls, I no longer know if… Continue

Excerpt from "Narrativism Rising"

For as long as they've been around, pencil and paper role-playing games have been seen in contrast and often in conflict with computer and video games. Debate has raged over whether CRPGs can really be considered role-playing games, and whether role-players can really be called 'gamers.' There has been a persistent perception that pencil and paper role-players are more 'traditional' or 'old school' than computer gamers, even though the two media have been around almost the same amount of time… Continue
